NEW MEXICO MINERS' MEMORIAL

The NM Department of Cultural Affairs is raising private funds to supplement the commissioning of an artist to create a “Memorial to New Mexico Miners” (the Memorial), an artwork to be located at the NM Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, NM (NM Tech).

The New Mexico State Legislature appropriated a total of $220,000 in state capital outlay funds to NM Tech for the Memorial in the 2023 and 2024 Legislative Sessions. Another $200,000 in private contributions to be added to the state funds to increase the project’s total budget to $420,000.

The deadline for any private funds raised to be added to the total project budget will be September 1, 2024.

The artist selected to create the Memorial will be chosen by due process of the New Mexico Arts division (NMAD) of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) through the Art in Public Places Program’s published site-specific commission procedures as described in Title 4, Chapter 12, Part 11 of New Mexico’s Administrative Code.
